The Amarnath Terror Attack on late Monday evening would have resulted in loss of more innocent lives, if 37 year old Salim Sheikh would not have shown the courage. Seven yatris were killed and 19 others were injured in the militant attack on the bus. The courageous driver hailing from Gujrat Vasal became the hero of nation, when he saved the yatris from indiscriminate bullet firing by militants on the bus. In a risky situation, the driver kept on driving the bus for nearly two kilometers on the Srinagar- Jammu National Highway before he reached an army camp.
Survivors expressed their gratitude to the driver and said that the death toll could have been much bigger, if Saleem had not shown his spontaneity and presence of mind. Salim’s family in Gujrat is proud of him and is happy to see him back. Salim couldn’t save seven lives; however, he courageously managed to move the remaining 49 persons to a safer place. Police officials said to media, “Salim braved the bullets and continued to drive the vehicle for more than a kilometer. He stopped the vehicle near Khanabal area.”
While confronting media, Salim said, “It was about 8 pm when the bus was surrounded by terrorists. They first fired from the front with the intention to eliminate the driver. I ducked sideways to escape the bullets and drove ahead. I do not know how I got the strength to go on at that time. Maybe Allah helped me and gave me strength.” Further added, "God gave me strength to keep moving, and I just did not stop. The firing went on and on, so I didn't stop. I kept driving." said Salim who is praised for his bravery.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani acknowleged Salim’s role and further added that he would nominate him for bravery award. People, all over India are praising Salim’s valour and alertness. Sheikh Salim Gafoor is rewarded ₹ 5 Lakh by The Jammu and Kashmir government.
We hope people around the country show humanity like Salim in such circumstances .
