On Monday, Sri-Lanka got eliminated from ICC Champions Trophy 2017, by dropping a dozen catches, missing a million run outs, and they confirmed the Pakistan’s ticket to Semi’s. They couldn’t bowl out the Pakistani Captain and the seemingly convincing total of 236 fell short.
The chaos was replicated earlier in the series by Bangladesh vs New Zealand (Bangladesh won by 5 wickets) and Pakistan vs South Africa) Pakistan won by 19 runs by duckworth-lewis), which has left the fan disheartened.
After all, who could have imagined that from the group comprising Australia, NewZeland, and England, Bangladesh would be the one matching shoulders with England to make it to the semis. The series have seen underdogs shine like a star.
But, this isn’t the first time where an ICC tournament has been shocked by the lesser contemplated team, and the cricketing history is filled with biggest upsets.
Let's look at the 5 instances where the comparably weaker team has outshined the favourite and has emerged victorious.
P.S – I didn’t know Canada has a cricket team, but then I didn’t follow Cricket beyond IPL.
Ireland wins over England in ICC World Cup 2011
Irish all-rounder Kevin O’Brien punctured the English men by knocking recording the fastest World Cup century off 50 balls, against England in Banglore. England made an impressive total of 327, which didn’t seem hard to defend but their bowlers failed to break the match-winning partnership of 162 between O'Brien and Alex Cusack.
Canada beat Bangladesh in Match 5, 2003 World Cup
Three years after Bangladesh got their test status, they were bowled out at 120 by Canadians where all-rounder A Codrington collected 5 wickets by conceiving 27 runs, along with 5 maidens in his 9 over spell. The 180 target in 50 overs seemed easily doable but Bangladesh batsman failed big time.
Kenya Beat West Indies in World Cup in 1996 in Pune
The two times World champions, having star players like Brain Lara, Richie Richardson, and Shivnaraine Chanderpaul, the legendary West Indies team was stunned by Kenya’s bowlers and were bowled all out for 93. while chasing the target of 166. It was a record victory for Kenya in an ICC tournament that continues to sting West Indies.
Zimbabwe beat Australia in 1983 and 2007
Who could have imagined that the new Zimbabwe team, who were playing their first one-day international match, would emerge victorious over legendary Australian team that consisted of players like DK Lillee, J.R Thompson, AR Border, R W Marsh, and still they fell short for 13 runs.
The same was repeated in 2007 T 20 World Cup where the dangerous Australian team with Captain Ricky Ponting, Mathew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Mike Hussey, and Andrew Symonds would be restricted to 138-9 and Zimbabwe won the match by scoring 12 of last over.
Bangladesh beat India by 5 wickets, 2007
Indian team looked dangerous with legends and top players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virendra Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, and guess what?
They were bowled out for 191. Apart from Sourav Ganguly (66) and Yuvraj Singh(47), no one managed to cross past the score of 15 runs.
And in return, Bangladesh batted ferociously and won the match with 5 wickets in hand.
